| Sometime this fall (1997), the USDA is supposed
to issue its long-delayed Federal regulations on organic food. Since the
main reason for the delay was agribusiness’ frenzy at being cut out of
the potential profits (20% increase per year in sales of organics since
1990), the new rules are expected to include things that are currently
banned, such as bio-engineered food, toxic sludge fertilizer, irradiation,
and factory-farmed animals. The worst thing is that these USDA rules will
explicitly prohibit any stricter standard. (For convincing detail on why
the new USDA regulations present a world-wide danger, see the July '97
article from the Pure
Foods Campaign.) Prepare for a fight when the new rules are issued.
Please see also the articles "Factory Wastes in Fertilizer" (with illustrations), and "Genetic Engineering Makes Us the Guinea Pigs" (with animation). These articles were also published in Slingshot in fall '97. |
